SLG Attorneys Speak at the 2015 AILA Central Florida Annual Conference

This Friday and Saturday, October 16th & 17th, the Central Florida Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) will host its 2015 Annual Immigration Law Conference in Orlando. This conference will feature leading immigration experts from across the United States and a sitting U.S. Congressman. The venue is the beautiful Omni Champions Gate Resort.

SLG has the honor of having two of its partners, Jeremy Lasnetski and John Gihon, selected to be panelists at the conference.

Jeremy was chosen to be the discussion leader on the U.S. Citizenship and Naturalization panel. This panel will cover topics including the acquisition of citizenship by birth abroad, derivation of citizenship through a naturalizing parent and the requirements and procedure for naturalization.

Jeremy will also serve as a panelist on the Introduction to U-Visas and VAWA (immigration benefits through the Violence Against Women Act) Panel. This panel will cover the basics for how to qualify and apply for a U-Visa, T-Visa and VAWA benefits. The discussion will also go into who qualifies for the victim of human trafficking visa (T-Visa) and an update on the changes related to adjusting status to lawful permanent resident after receiving a U-Visa. As a bonus, the panel will also discuss how criminal convictions can affect applicants for each of these forms of humanitarian relief.

John was chased to serve on the “Judicial Review and 11th Circuit Court Update” panel. This panel features John along with Mary Kramer, author of Immigration Consequences of Criminal Activity, Michael Vastine, Professor at St. Thomas University Law School, and Sui Chung of the Immigration Law & Litigation Group. These esteemed panelists will discuss topics including prolonged detention, recent developments in the burden of proof in removal cases, categorical approach, drug crimes, Florida Burglary and Theft convictions, and updates regarding immigration cases from the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals.

John will also be the discussion leader for the Immigration Court Practice Panel that features Immigration Judges Kevin Chapman and James Grim. This panel will cover the basics of practicing in Immigration Court, bond hearings, how to file documents and obtain discovery, filing motions and litigating master calendar and individual hearings on relief from removal.
